I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”
Psalm 122:1
At St. John’s, it’s our joy to go to God’s house and worship him. But our worship services aren’t mainly about what we do for God. They’re about rejoicing in what he has done for us in his Son Jesus Christ. Jesus — our crucified, risen, and living Savior — is at the heart of our worship, with the rest of our lives flowing from that. As Christians, our entire lives are a response of worship to our Savior’s love. The worship services are an opportunity to grow in that love as Jesus comes to us in Word and Sacrament. We worship Thursday nights at 6PM and Sunday mornings at 10:30AM*
*On the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, please note that our 10:30AM service is held in our school auditorium. This location allows us greater flexibility for seating, children’s sermons, music and video.
Music
Music is an important part of every worship service. Our services often use traditional hymns set to an organ accompaniment, while our twice-monthly Blended services blend those traditional hymns with different instrumentation and a video display. Whatever the type of music, though, the message is the same: in word and song, our worship services proclaim to our hearts the reality that Jesus has taken our sins away. We sing of our forgiveness and our Savior’s love. And we encourage each other in the strength of God to live Christian lives in response to Christ’s love to us.
Order of Service
Whatever musical style is used in a particular service, the same basic outline is followed:
The Invocation– We call on the name of our Savior God as we praise him.
Admitting sins and finding forgiveness – We acknowledge that we have not always done what God asks. Then we are assured of forgiveness because of what Jesus Christ has done for us.
Bible Readings – We hear selections from God’s Old Testament prophets, Jesus’ apostles, and from Jesus himself in the Gospels. The pastor also gives a brief explanation of each reading.
Sermon– One of our pastors offers instruction and encouragement in a Bible-based sermon. We hear how we can expect God’s guidance and grace for dealing with problems, as well as the promise of forgiveness and eternal life in heaven through Jesus.
Response to the Word – We respond with offerings, hymns, and prayers for the things God has promised to us and for strength to do what he has asked.
Parting blessing – We hear one last assurance of God’s care.
Mixed throughout these different parts of our service are hymns and short songs to praise God and proclaim his love.
